AlexHi, I'm Alex Cox. And I'm Mattie Cox. This is a show about gender, our minds, and all sorts of transitions. Welcome to Two Headed Girl.

Mattie Cox, you wanted to talk about bathrooms. Let's talk about bathrooms. The moral panic of trans people.

MattieBut this episode is lighthearted and fun, but also bathrooms.

AlexYeah, we'll try to keep it as lighthearted as possible. Because, wow, it often seems like the biggest fear of trans people is the idea that for some reason trans folks are going to attack people in bathrooms.

MattieWe were watching Scream 2 last night and as we all know, Ghostface, the killer who stabs people and Scream, was hiding in a bathroom at the beginning of Scream 2. And can you say that joke that you so eloquently said last night?

AlexOh, yeah. The murderer is in the bathroom in the opposite stall of the spoilers, the guy who is killed, and he's like stabbed through the like stall door. and that that is like what people truly fear uh is is some sort of violence and especially some sort of sexual assault happening in bathrooms because they think that a man

is going to pretend to be a woman and go into a women's restroom and hurt them but guess what

MattieWe just want to pee. And end podcast. That's it. Good talk.

AlexAnd yeah, we just want to pee and podcast. Wow. I said we when referring to trans people. That's new. Gonna keep blazing on from that. Gonna address my own insecurities and internalized transphobia later. But both of us have had so many experiences with bathrooms. For myself, I always get clocked as a like cis basic ass man in the majority of public

restrooms I use. And also typically in the winter because I have more layers and my chest is less visible. But at least once every month, less so now, during our global pandemic, I get, this is the women's bathroom or you're in the wrong bathroom. And it makes me sad because I'm like, I just want to pee.

And I don't want to go into the men's bathroom because I don't feel like that is a space for me. Quite literally, because usually there are not many stalls and mostly urinals.

MattieOr doors on stalls. There's usually not doors or locks on stalls.

AlexWhich is not something I even knew about. what in the heck is that so when a woman or a group of women tell me I'm in the wrong bathroom I don't know how to react because when I'm maybe feeling in a feisty mood I'm like no I'm not but one time when I did that a woman just went to get the manager it was in a theater actually

Oh my god. Yeah. And so now I just leave and wait until they like the group or the woman who yelled at me was is gone. And then go pee.

MattieCan I ask you a question? Yeah. Do you ever make your voice higher and more feminine when responding to them?

AlexIf I do respond to them, absolutely. I usually say, again, when I'm feisty, I'm like, yeah, I am. What I eventually learned to say was, oh, I'm sorry, isn't this the women's restroom? and that stammering and stuttering isn't my typical stammering and stuttering. I try to make my voice as high and gentle as possible so that, you know, they know that I am just a confused

woman who is like, what? Oh, oh no. What? Am I in the wrong spot? And then they're like, and then usually the group will be like, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. And I'm like, yeah you better be but more often than not I just leave and wait until they leave and then I proceed

Mattieto go pee see I have the opposite effect in that when I I I now exclusively use the men's restroom but before my voice changed on tea I didn't use the even though I was socially transitioning already because my voice didn't drop until like really drop until like six months on T.

I and even now I don't have that deep of a voice really but until my voice dropped I didn't use the men's restroom because my voice was so high that I knew if I had to say anything I would get

Alexlike clocked you know what I mean? Yeah have you ever been told that you're in the wrong bathroom?

Mattienot since i started transitioning at all whatsoever what yeah because guys don't talk to each other in the bathroom they don't look at each other they don't care like they don't talk to each other i have gotten weird looks and my response i've always just lowered my voice as much as possible and been like um okay and then once my voice dropped i felt comfortable always going in the men's restroom unless there's no freaking doors on the stall and then if there is

a women's restroom I will sometimes go in the women's restroom and I am very lucky to have that privilege that I'm not like I don't look like a big burly cis dude so that I can use

Alexboth bathrooms if I have to. Actually, now that I think about it, whenever I go to the bathroom in a public place with you or with one of my friends who is like really overtly feminine, in fact, sorry, I'm just giggling because one time I was with a friend of mine who's a trans woman and another woman in the bathroom said to me, excuse me, you're in the wrong bathroom.

Which delighted my friend, rightly so, because it's fucking ridiculous. But also, when you and I would use the same bathroom, people just assumed, oh, lesbian couple. And we sometimes get the glare. Less so now because it is 2020, although this was 2019 and previously when it happened because pandemic. So now people pay less attention to me in the bathroom.

Thank God. But part of that is because I live in a large city and most of the places that I occupy are queer friendly. And I'm not talking about like gay bars. I'm just talking about places where, you know, queer people can walk around and not get stared at. And the more I am thinking back in my mind, it's typically movie theaters and Target, which are, I mean, just by the number of humans in the world are predominantly straight.

So that makes total sense. Huh, what a nice little realization. I had. I don't know if it was a good realization or a bad one, but here we are.

MattieTo clarify, are you saying that you get called out or misgendered more at Target and movie

Alextheaters or less because they are bigger spaces? I'm told I'm using the wrong bathroom more when I am at movie theaters and Target just because there happen to be more straight people there.

MattieMore Karens.

AlexYes, and more Karens. Yeah, it's not a coincidence that it's usually like the midnight premiere of a Disney or Marvel movie or like some mainstream thing that this typically happens or Christmas shopping. So how about you? Because until you started using men's restrooms, I truly had no idea how little men talked to one another.

I didn't know that there was no eye contact made. I didn't know that there like it was if each person was in their own little silo because notoriously there's the stereotype of women going to the bathroom together, which was I mean, it's it's a stereotype for a reason because I've always dreaded it. not because of gender because i am a shy peer i cannot remember

you find it even after all of these years you find it entertaining yeah i literally can't remember the last time i took a poop in public i truly cannot potty training must have been so difficult for your mother no quite the opposite because i'm a shy peer so we'll get into it but at a young age I still like physically couldn't pee so I think actually potty training was probably easier because it was like diaper or bathroom right so like when parents potty train

Mattielet's get into this now I'm gonna avoid your question we'll get back to that but so when you're potty training your kid you like sit with them in the bathroom or you like put the faucet on or whatever and you're like okay go potty so your mom had to wait for like two hours for you

Alexto actually go pee in the bathroom i don't know we should ask her because i i mean that's that's uh

Mattiei don't really have a memory of like going to the bathroom as a kid except for one time when

Alexand i i don't know if i've ever even told you this i sorry i can remember this was such a traumatizing thing that like uh i completely dissociated from my body because i think i was maybe six or seven years old and didn't check whether or not someone had put the seat down

MattieI remember it. Yep. Yep. Please tell the public this.

AlexI got stuck. I had to call because this is, you know, 1997. I had to call out to my mom and my aunt. It was at my aunt's house.

MattieSo again, to clarify, the toilet seat was up. You fell in the toilet in the water and got stuck.

AlexOh, and the other story that my mom likes to tell actually is when we were in a Nordstrom public bathroom. And I think this actually was when I was not being potty trained, but it was one of the first times that I used the restroom like on my own. You know how some kids, they often go into the big stall with their parents to help out?

MattieYeah, because they need help wiping for some reason, which gross. Kids just learn how to wipe their own butts.

AlexOh my goodness.

MattieGive them a break.

AlexWe're doing a podcast episodes about how people should not care about how other folks use the bathroom. So no, you know what? Kids, learn how to wipe, but get help if you need it.

MattieI guess.

AlexBut I used a stall all on my own. And no one explained the concept of automatic flushing.

MattieOh, right, right.

AlexYeah, which is something that everyone should be told about. Especially if you are a kid and the sensor doesn't recognize that you're there. So it flushes and then it sprays on your butt.

MattieAnd it's so horrifying. Did you ever think that maybe that incident is what made you a shy peer? Oh, I'm sure. Like, it was just like, that's what traumatized you from peeing ever again.

AlexYou were like, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. I mean, there were so many things, like, um, brothers barging in. Like, there were very few peaceful bathroom times in my home.

MattieNot that you asked, but my potty training experience, I do recall. and I my mom was studying for some tests like nurse tests to pass and I would be on my little potty and she would read me medical textbooks so I learned a lot when I was learning how to

Alexpee on the big potty what a strange but charming thing to do I love that story I don't think I've ever heard it oh that's so charming it was very pleasant yes i love that i love that so much

Mattiei'm also not a shy peer and can pee in like 30 seconds and waiting for you to get out of the restroom is and will forever be one of one of the great slow moments of my life you know what

Alexyou could probably read a lot of books in the times that you have to wait for me in public

Mattieplaces to go pee. You know, I should start doing that. Why did you not suggest that sooner? That

Alexis a great idea. Because I didn't think of it until you talked about your mom reading you

Mattietextbooks. That's so smart and cute. And this has nothing at all to do with being queer or trans in bathrooms. But I think this is this is just a lovely little moment. And I'll actually disagree

Alexwith you because i think it is relevant since our formative memories involve uh like either good but typically bad bathroom incidents you know i fell in the toilet a couple times in public as a youth wait wait you fell into public toilets a couple times i was really small

Mattieand I'm still really small. And I remember I used to go downtown with my grandma a lot as a kid. And she would have to even at like seven or eight, she would have to come in the stall with me and hold my hands because my butt wasn't big enough to stay on both sides of the toilet seat. And if I went in by myself, or if she forgot, or if I forgot, and didn't balance on one side of

Alexthe toilet seat i would fall in the water okay you just i mean i'm sure there are young toddlers listening but you just told them that you learn how to wipe your butt but you couldn't use a public

Mattiebathroom without remembering whether or not you would fall in no i remembered i was too tiny and

Alexwould fall in the toilet you just have to tell tell someone i need help well you know to be seven

Mattieor eight years old and need your grandma to hold your hands so you could not fall in the bathroom

Alexis is kind of embarrassing oh okay i i was picturing like a three or four year old situation no no you had such a tiny butt i had such a tiny butt you had a you had a real tiny butt for wait So when did this stop?

MattieOh, I think by the time I was like 10.

AlexOh my God. Your butt was like minuscule for a decade.

MattieWell, to segue from butts, can we talk about how guys in public restrooms, some of them pull their pants down past their butts and or all the way to the floor to use a urinal or to be in a stall and just pull their pants down all the way. And if you are not a small child, this is not okay.

AlexKeep your butt covered. I'm just kind of confused by it because isn't that what a fly is for? Because I could understand a situation. I don't know. Pants are fancy and there's lots of different kinds. These days in 2020, there's a lot of different pants. Like if you're wearing sweat pants out somewhere i i mean still like meh you could pull down the front i guess but that's what

Mattiea fly is for well if we're gonna get into it and you want the nitty-gritty details there are lots of underwear that don't have flies there are lots of jeans where the fly isn't low enough for you to comfortably pull out what is in your pants can i say penis or dick or what can i say oh because

AlexBecause lots of people, especially trans people, call their undercarriage parts different things. Yeah. Yeah.

MattieSo whatever. Pull out. Whatever is. To pull out whatever is in your pants. Yeah. And some flies just aren't low enough. So.

AlexYou just can't say cocks because that's our name. I'm sorry for interrupting you. Go on.

MattieWorth it for that bad joke. so a lot of people in men's restrooms pull their bits over the waist like pull the waistband of both things down and just flop it over or pull it over the waistband which that seems so difficult

Alexfor me unless you have a really long penis i have a question follow-up do they pull out their balls

Mattieas well? No, you don't have to pull out the balls. You just got to pull out the, I mean, it depends how big your penis is. Like what about guys with micro penises or metoiaplasty?

Metoiaplasty surgery takes the bottom growth from testosterone and turns it into a working penis, basically. It lengthens your urethra so you can stand to pee using your growth from testosterone that is colloquially referred to as a tea dick oh wait wait that's super interesting

Alexi didn't know that being on testosterone also lengthened your urethra no it doesn't the surgery lengthens the urethra so that you can stand to pee okay so is it that like then the urethra is kind of put into like the clitoris and then so it's turned into a penis yes all right okay yeah what a cool like that's amazing god wow surgery is amazing if only it wasn't you know

tens of thousands of dollars to like like most gender affirming surgeries the folks i know who have had that surgery like we're not we're not super tight so we you know it's usually never appropriate to ask somebody about you know how they pee and like where their urethra is but luckily uh there's a lovely youtuber that we've probably mentioned before jamie dodger who has had extensive bottom surgery and explains it so well you can find

that in the show notes i really like show notes please look at them they're a great resource

MattieMoving on from urinals and bottom surgery, because this is not an extensive bottom surgery episode. It is about bathrooms. Would you like to talk about stand-to-pee devices and your experience with them?

AlexWell, okay. First, let's talk about what an STP is and how you came to use them.

Mattieso an STP is a stands for a stand to pee device usually looks phallic is a cup with a funnel and it looks like a penis and you put it under your natural bits and pee into it and it funnels into the toilet and I came to use them because I was curious wanted to try them and because

to use a men's restroom you almost need one because no stall doors and I don't I you know most guys don't sit to pee what do you do when you need to poop in public I will go to the women's

Alexrestroom if there's no stall doors there are so many choices when it comes to going to the bathroom and i don't i can't believe that i'm saying this but we should have a cis guy on this show to just help help tell us how they use the bathroom because how can you poop in front of other people

Mattiethey just don't care guys don't look into stalls there's no eye contact there's no conversation

Alexand they just don't care they just poop with no door i have never been like when we talk about privilege this is honestly one of the things that i am incredibly envious of because as i've mentioned women often go to the restroom together and not just go to the restroom together continue a conversation while using the bathroom. What? Why? Why? And now I have learned to kind of give

no fucks and say, oh, are you going to the bathroom? I'm not going to go to the bathroom because I'm a nervous peer. It's not you. It's me. But because otherwise, then I'm stuck like listening to the trying to listen to this person and then trying to pee and then having the awkward situation of knowing that they didn't hear me pee and I'm just like doing a fake wipe

Mattietype of thing anyway I always used to talk to you in the bathroom when we were using the same bathroom at the same time and you would be like shut up shut up shut up I can't pee shut up you

Alexstill do it in our home well yeah that's that's why I I never used to bring my phone into the bathroom but now I do and I play podcasts yeah because it makes me not bother you yeah yeah so thank you for uh helping me in my shy peeing circumstance all right sorry for that diversion let's go back to STPs and for a lot of people it helps relieve some dysphoria right yeah it's a

Mattievery affirming thing and there are so many so many different kinds there are kinds that you have to wear with a harness there are kinds that you can pack with there are kinds that are in my opinion impossible to pack with so packing is when you put uh the silicone dick in your just like right in your underwear you just plop her in and sometimes you have to wear a harness or a jock strap and some you pack up with some are light some are heavy some are more realistic hold up

Alexwhat is packing up because you've actually said this to me before and i don't know is it you just put the the dick up yeah and you point it out the shaft yeah oh i don't know if any

Mattiecis guys actually pack like that i feel like that's just when you have a boner but apparently it's like a common thing with packers and I just I hate the ones where you have to pack up because it feels so unnatural not that sticking a silicone dick in your pants ever feels quite natural there are some STPs that are super realistic and pass like the glance test where if a guy were to look it would look cis and there are other ones that are just meant for functionality where it's

Just like whip it out and pee and go because if someone looks at it they're gonna know it's fake. On the topic of just putting it in your underwear and whipping it out and ease of packing with one. I have tried so many different STPs and have maybe found one that I sort of kind of enjoy. But it's been a journey. It's been lots of money and a journey as it is for most people where you can't like exactly try it out. So you have to look at reviews and like just guess which one you think is going to look right.

And some are $20 and some are $500. And it all just depends on functionality and realism.

AlexAnd of course, it's harder to find ones that are different shades. Because even in the trans community, there is elements of white supremacy and it fucking sucks.

MattieIt is a lot better now. It is much better even than it was three years ago.

AlexThat is true. You're right.

MattieEspecially the small trans-owned companies. I find them really great. I've been able, a lot of trans-mask or non-binary folks that use the men's restroom, choose to use them so that they can pass or use the men's restroom or just be able to pee there because sometimes there are no stalls so you just gotta which again how do you poop but um

I remember the most awkward uh situation I had was I was not wearing an STP we were at a hotel and I walked in and it was literally a square restroom with a urinal in every corner and that was it that's all there was your your butts would literally touch to use those yeah it was the most the most confusing bathroom design ever and I was just like well I guess I'm using the women's

restroom because I forgot to put in my silicone dick oh my gosh oh that's the other thing the

Alexlayout of the men's restroom i just it's fascinating the decisions that go into this i if you like if you're listening to this and you have any insight into it like if you build bathrooms or does that like i am genuinely curious because i i don't know it is like there's a reason those twitter accounts like cursed bathrooms exist that have the pictures

of bathrooms that are just ridiculous and it's typically one's meant for men and what has been your experience then with that so far is the urinal thing true like nobody goes and stands next to one another if there are multiple urinals?

MattieSo I've only used urinals where it's been really busy and I've had no option. So everyone is next to each other. Like at Hamilton, when there was a big line of people, I had to use a urinal next to each other. Or single stall bathrooms where there's just been a urinal and a stall. And I've wanted to practice.

AlexSo you practice using an STP at home, though, too.

MattieYeah, they recommend trans websites and trans home companies that sell STPs recommend practicing so you don't pee all over yourself because it's definitely a new feeling because you've never stood to pee before. i assume um actually do you want to talk about some people cannot do it and would you like to talk about your experience with not being able to do it because your body does feel like it's going

Alexto pee on itself sometimes well here's the thing i'm a shy peer already we've gone over that But I guess when I'm standing, my body just refuses to pee. It won't do it. And the idea was I would try a stand to pee device just to, you know, compare our thoughts and feelings about it. Because I've also never packed, as in put, a phallic object in your underwear.

Yes. um so yeah even even saying it makes me like oh because i i uh don't typically have penises around there anyway so really really not a huge fan of penises penises beware yeah no no no penis wants to be around me because i don't want to be around any penises anyway you even said wait so you've like never peed in the shower and no I haven't ever peed in the shower

who hasn't at least one time in their life peed in the shower I don't know but I I mean maybe I have at some point like I I don't know I truly don't know but I tried so many times like there was a week where I just packed with an STP which was also interesting because when I was packing

MattieI didn't really notice. Please explain or share your first reaction to it which was hilarious and

AlexI will never forget. Well I have forgotten so can you share? You just exclaimed how cold it was for like 20 minutes oh yeah well it's called silicon silicon silicon silicon valley no silicon silicon um i mean it is a cone in your pants it's not a cone i well i have actually used a uh what what is it a sheepy she we she we like a long long time ago i i don't even know if it was called that at

the time but it was for camping and yeah it's been around that long yeah yeah and yeah I I actually we went on a long walk and so I was wearing a prosthetic dick in my pants I'm so I'm so uncomfortable talking about this but you gave me a stand-to-peak device to put in my pants to wear throughout the day to see how I felt about it.

And honestly, I forgot about it other than, you know, the initial feeling of it being fucking freezing. But then I sort of forgot it was in there. But then walking around after a while, it got like warm. I don't know. I sensed a bit of jealousy from you actually when I was like yeah I don't I don't really notice it

Mattiebecause we went on a pretty long walk yeah so I was jealous because I'm very tiny and it is very hard to find underwear that will hold the packer close enough to me that it doesn't move around and like you want it to move around naturally with your body but you don't want it to like almost fall out of the leg of your underwear and there are some underwear that are made specifically for packing but they're not always the best or most comfortable some are great uh some suck and

they're also really expensive and I just want to be able to like toss it in my pants pull on any underwear and go like that's the point I don't want to have to think about it and I was jealous that you could just put it in your underwear and it fit because you you don't have to have it like cling to your body as tight because you have way more than me yeah I think so it just my

Alexlike the underwear I was wearing was tighter I really I don't know but I hated it yeah it just

Mattiefit better with your anatomy which is so hard to find I've tried so many STPs and I've got an okay one that I would wear for functionality but not on a daily basis because it's not comfortable to pack with and it sucks they're expensive there's so many of them and you don't always know what's going to work for you and it's they are great inventions I love them I am very lucky that I have enough money to be able to like try different ones out i wish we were talking about this the

other day i wish that there was a website or like a group or a blog somewhere where guys or nbs or trans people non-binary that like to use the whole queer umbrella right that like to use stps or pack could specifically review the ones they have and compare with like certain body types because I feel like that is what affects the usage and functionality the most and how it fits

is if you compare like your your body type does that make sense for sure you basically want

Alexqueer Yelp which doesn't exist because there are reviews but usually it's on the company's website or it's just a review of an individual product on someone's blog or YouTube channel and there's really no comprehensive collection. And it's usually just about like the appearance and the

Mattiefunctionality and like how long it lasts. It's not really about the experiences and that would be so useful to so many people because there's just like trans dick exchanges basically online where people are like this didn't work for me I will give it to you or they sell them to each other and I've done this before at like discounted prices and stuff like that because it's really hard to know and it's really expensive to try to find what will work best for you.

AlexAnd, I mean, I don't like that because I don't want to use a device that another person has peed in before, but it's a necessity for so many folks. Not just people who experience bottom dysphoria, which, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't seem to experience that, but you use the stand-to-be devices as a utility because otherwise you will be read as a woman in public spaces if you use the restroom.

Mattieyeah also sometimes I experience social bottom dysphoria so like in the summer when I was wearing like gym shorts and stuff and like I pass you know if you don't see a bulge down there

Alexyeah sometimes you get a look yeah and I I know what you mean too like I bet I don't know listening to this sounds so gross because i'm sorry i don't like it doesn't sound gross hey don't shame no

Mattiethat's it's not gross this is like talking about like body hair you need to state that is your personal preference that you think it is gross but this helps these devices help so many people and are so important and i just wish they were more affordable and readily available and that

Alexthere were more resources absolutely especially for black and brown folks because surprise surprise it's harder to find those in stock but what I meant is personally for me I don't want to stare at anyone's dick and it is sort of funny though because you're right if you are wearing gym shorts like you can like some i don't know you i don't know you can tell if a dick is there or not

whether it be a prosthetic or a real one like even if you're not looking for it it's it's a weird cognitive dissonance that i had never thought i mean i had the thought of it but never noticed like even now it wouldn't be able to i i don't know it's in it's interesting it's like it's like

Mattiea social thing i feel like people would not necessarily that they look but like they would notice like um for trans people trans guys and mb guys to use the gym like uh like male locker rooms and of course we're talking about all this pre pre-covid so yeah thankfully a lot of these situations aren't happening right now and people can freely express and experiment with their genders at home and don't have to worry about that and or the complete opposite where they have

Alexto be closeted oh i just realized something it's not that i notice when somebody has a dick but you can tell from a person's gait and how they sit often that's with an sdp too like you have to

Mattielearn to walk with balls in between your legs and it's very uncomfortable it's really weird especially if you have narrow hips like I do.

AlexAnd I think that because I have wider hips, it was easier for me, even though sometimes thigh gaps do exist. And it's not that you have a thigh gap, but you just have more room there. And I don't just because I have large thighs. And I don't know, I expected, I don't know. If you can sense my discomfort, listeners, it's because it's there. because personally I don't want a dick.

MattieBut it was you wanted to try it out like just to see.

AlexSo I like bodily experiments.

MattieThat sounded weird.

AlexI know it did.

MattieYeah. I like body mods.

AlexI want to be a cyborg.

MattieI mean there there is they are making a bionic penis.

AlexSo yeah. And that is super cool. That is the one dick that I want to see in detail.

MattieYeah. That seems it seems super. It's robot dick.

AlexI want to touch it. I'm sorry, I do.

MattieThe only dick you want to touch.

AlexI need to live my truth. I want to touch the cyborg dick. We really appreciate you checking out this episode of Two Headed Girl. with people who have gotten metoiloplasty which is the bottom surgery one of the bottom surgery
