AlexIt's almost the end of Transtober. Ooh, spooky. Spooky, spooky, scary, scary.
Mattieso i was looking for my notes and realized that i put a couple titles on them for this episode would you like to hear them do i have a choice no okay uh this one's really stupid transcairvania
Alexhotel and this one just says this one just says wait so the transcairvania like transylvania But couldn't you just do Transylvania? Like, why Transcairvania? You've added...
MattieI know. I know. I said it was stupid. Go on. The other one is Drag and Death.
AlexHuh. Huh. Actually...
MattieI was clearly a little floaty when I wrote these.
AlexOh, floaty, floaty. Maybe had some gummies? Some happy gummies?
MattieYeah.
AlexOkay. You know what?
Mattieum drag gone death not drag on death but drag and death drag and death oh just drag and death
Alexyeah i mean that's that is kind of what the thing we're talking about today should be titled which is American Horror Story Hotel and it's drag and death that's the whole this whole series really I agree episode done all summed up Matthew I have been trying to get you to watch American Horror Story and specifically this American Horror Story season um called Hotel for a very long time
MattieLike four years. Yes.
AlexAnd if folks don't know, American Horror Story is a serialized show. So each season is its own discrete story and sometimes its own discrete universe. Although there's, you know, there's some little spooky spoilers in it. There's some crossovers. But this, I think, is my favorite season. And I've seen all but the two most recent. So the one about the election, because too real, and the one about aliens, because I don't know, I was rewatching Hotel with you.
MattieSo spoilers for American Horror Story, the first couple seasons up to Hotel, because that's all I've seen.
AlexOh, really?
MattieI saw the first, I saw all of the first season, all of the witch season, and all of Hotel, and that's it.
AlexI know that folks can go into this and just watch this season of American Horror Story, and you're not really missing out on anything. So, do you think there's any other context we need to provide?
Mattieuh so american horror story hotel the plot centers around the mysterious hotel cortez in los angeles california that catches the eye of an intrepid homicide detective the hotel is host to many disturbing scenarios and paranormal events and is overseen by the countess lady gaga a blood-sucking
Alexfashionista that was a weird choice of words oh y'all so where did this summary come from the official american horror story wikipedia oh oh like fan fandom.wikipedia.biz i don't know what it's called yeah i think that that is a decent summary i mean again all folks need to know is that it's a haunted hotel lots of people die lots of people have died and are currently dying in
this season in this big old like oh oh it's a gorgeous hotel in my opinion like um art deco styled out and yes the uh main like the headliner for this season was lady gaga who i think does a
Mattiefantastic job yeah no argument there i thought she was great so get out of here with all your
Alexother opinions yeah everyone's everyone has everyone's got like a lot of opinions about every american horror story but if you've liked the stuff that we have talked or rather if you've enjoyed things for example like jennifer's body then this is for you um yeah for sure and people may be thinking to themselves how wait why why why why this why this and because it's trans tober because it's uh well yes because it's trans tober uh but but reason the
first it is a ryan murphy show and he is king of the like cable network queers yeah king of the yeah he did i mean we're we're trying to forgive him for for his uh past sins of glee because you know many are culpable in that um but this is one of my favorite seasons of american horror story
and i am not a big horror fan as i've talked about a number of times but i've always really liked american horror story not so much the first season but that was kind of like i i don't know it was very basic in terms of like this is a spooky scary story spooky spooky scary But one thing that I've always really loved about Ryan Murphy's stuff and specifically American Horror Story is it does not fall into the queer cliches and or tragedies.
MattieLike there's always... Really? Wait, in every season, like pretty typically or just this season?
AlexI would say pretty much every season.
MattieOh, wow.
AlexI mean, that's I mean, I guess spoilers like, yes, some gays do die, but it's not everybody does. Yeah. But there's never extra horror. Like being queer isn't seen as horrific. And in fact, there is I think it was the season right before this called American Horror Story Freaks. And it was all about a like a town that had this freak show. And it really got into, you know, how this community of people that we would now, I mean, largely were either disabled or just like had a testosterone imbalance, like bearded women.
and it really examines the taboos of the other same with American Horror Story Asylum I you know if read like the log line for each season and if it seems like your jam go for it yeah I don't know
Mattieif I would want to watch every season honestly but I am glad that we watched the Lady Gaga season
Alexand i wanted you to watch this one um because again like it's very very gay and well i mean like yes like we say gay as in like the umbrella but like it is so much in this season is canonically queer like there are more queer characters than there are straight ones well does it count if
Mattiethey're vampires because i mean they kind of vampires kind of just like eat and screw everyone so they're just like all the sexual what is all the sexual all right i mean spoilers there aren't
Alexmany people in this hotel who are actually alive and in fact like the one of the running plots is kind of like okay how do we keep this hotel in business because the ghosts and vampires which aren't ever called vampires which is another distinct thing like they're uh like it's very
Mattiesexual except for the kids the kids that are like make lady gaga special blood juice yeah well they
Alexget it isn't there literally a sippy cup at one point i don't know but that's so gross that's some twilight shit right there well i i mean the running thing is like okay so how are we gonna keep this place in business because everyone keeps dying in here so i would say yes the vampires and ghosts count as the uh well lack of body count i guess of queers so all of these lovely
vampires they're actually called um what like people with the blood disease like they call it the blood disease um or the or the virus which is you know another reference to aids and the the it is the Cecil or Cecil Hotel in L.A., which is...
MattieIt's based on that.
AlexYeah, it's based on that. And I believe, like, a couple people died there, but spoilers, everybody. Like, any hotel you've been to, many people have died there. Just hotels have a lot of guests. But that was also, it was not quite notorious, but it was definitely a hotel in L.A. where folks would take sex workers. And that's kind of another like little wink and a nod to sort of try to de-stigmatize like all of these things that are horrible.
Nah, not really.
MattieRight. Being a vampire is worse.
AlexYes.
MattieSo what happens to people in the hotel that aren't vampires, the people that have died from like drug overdose, like Sarah Paulson, or getting shot by the police, like the hotel's creator, they are stuck as ghosts because they died with unfinished business. And the only two living people are the people that work at the bar and the desk, one of which is Liz Taylor, who is a character we're going to be focusing on.
And the other is Kathy Bates, but I can't remember her character's name because she is Kathy Bates.
AlexOh, I believe it's Elise, but... It's Iris. Iris, thank you. She also, though, gets the virus.
Mattieum well okay but spoilers everybody dies i mean and then they all live in the hotel
Alexwell i mean and that's the thing the one person or rather the last person to die is the one binary trans character liz as you mentioned liz taylor and she's one of my favorite characters in not just any american horror story but any sort of like i don't know bartending motif like i there's just something about her that just is so attractive and in a way that like
it's she she's played like that like the other people well beings whatever the other spirits and whatnot in the hotel really gravitate towards her because she's like really listens to them and
Mattieis kind to everyone yeah and doesn't judge them even though they're all murderers and pretty much nobody in the hotel judges her there the guests are there's a lot of transphobic guests yep but none of the characters that are like the core ones that live in the hotel is what you're saying
AlexAnd there's an episode based around Liz and what her previous life was like. And she was primarily in business sales so that she could travel and then dress up in hotels and just be herself for one night. And this particular night that we see in a flashback, she's at the Hotel Cortez and meets Lady Gaga.
MattieSo after she runs into Lady Gaga while she's dressed up as her feminine self in the hotel room, Lady Gaga sits down and says that she's beautiful and is like the first person, if a vampire can be a person, let's just say the first.
AlexLet's just say a person.
MattieYeah, the first person to affirm and name this character Liz, actually, and help her do her makeup.
Alexfor the first time and it's a really really beautiful scene too because it's i i mean i don't know watching it there was this sense of like secondhand gender euphoria yeah i'm not inclined to enjoy feminine things but i you rarely see a sort of i i mean this this literally was a
makeover but you rarely see in my opinion a trans formation that is both low-key and not um is both low-key but does induce that euphoria in fact the when it's like over the top it makes me kind of like okay yeah what do you mean by oh well i was gonna say how the episode
Mattieor that scene impacted me is i got secondhand gender euphoria because it was great to see a trans elder like someone older uh not on hormones at all uh transition and later in life too and like just fully accept it and it was like you said it was so beautiful because it i don't know they're just it felt like a very true story like a an actual transgender person wrote it that's how
it felt like it wasn't your typical you know tv high schooler coming out depiction and this
Alexa million million times over spoilers but lady gaga is sure like technically a villain but i mean all of everybody is kind of like a um anti-hero type of thing and but they do have that sort of queer coding of i'm a villain but i'm doing this to survive and she lady gaga the countess sees in Liz someone who is trying to survive just like her because you know um she does some bad stuff
Mattieand a lot of the Liz doesn't do the bad stuff Liz cleans up the bad stuff yes and then murders a
Alexbunch of people at the end but the uh wait she murders people at the end she tries to kill Lady Gaga to take over the hotel oh yes yes yes yes but in yeah and in in self-defense yeah gosh I'm just realizing now how much she's a girl boss i mean it's true she's the one who figures out how to keep the hotel in business oh man don't do this yeah and becomes and becomes the face of
Mattiethe fashion designer the dead fashion designer her arc only improves as she gets older like as she transitions her life only improves and that's also so rare to see yes for sure like okay
Alexyeah yeah she we should say one of the ghosts is like this um basically he's versace um but he and but so now he's like bitter in this hotel and because he died there he's a dead ghost yeah he's he's a dead ghost versus the you know you know what i meant but uh so she's like uh hey you can't leave this hotel but i can so she uh becomes the literal embodiment of this fashion brand
and the oh gosh we need to circle back to the whole uh like her her first um scene dressing as herself and being out as herself. Yeah. Was there something we missed that you wanted to touch on? After the countess has given Liz this amazing makeover, she's like, all right, fuck it. Let's go out on the town. And Liz is like, I'm not ready for that. And the countess is like, all right, how about you just go get some ice and come back to the room? Which felt like another affirmation
of like yeah oh okay yeah baby steps this isn't like some voila my transition is over uh but unfortunately liz runs into her business partner partners in the hotel hallway and they say all of
Mattiethe horrible slurs that we've all come to know and love and she yells at them and stands up for
Alexherself yes and then lady gaga murders them yes and it's it's great and i've seen because she keeps on insisting i'm i'm not gay i'm not gay and not in a like gross gay people because half the hotel's gay but in a no i am a woman and i like straight men fuck all of you but of course she's in this really vulnerable position and unlike a lot of stories about trans people she's not murdered
her assaulters are just slashed at the throat by the countess and so the countess is lady gaga we did not mention that by the way yeah i'm so lady gaga aka countess and um it's not that And Liz literally has like a debt to the Countess, but she stays in this hotel because she realizes, oh, this is a safe space to be the woman I am.
MattieDoes she ever really leave? Because I would say that's the one thing about the transition. Like everything about it is really positive. And we'll talk about the arc, I assume in a second. But everything about the transition is really positive. Except I never thought about this. Is the hotel the only place she feels like she can be accepted? Or was she just like, you know what? It's nice here. Why the heck not? Like, do you think it's a conscious, like a fear to go out and be in the world?
Or do you think it's just like a purposeful choice? Do you know what I mean? Like not one of fear.
AlexYes. I think that initially it, like I said, it was that she was staying there because that was a safe space. but then as we mentioned she goes on to be the ceo basically of a fashion company and we see her out in the world multiple times at the end of this oh yeah that's right so that is kind of like i guess the end of her transition but unlike a lot of characters we see on tv she does not alter uh
Like, she does no HRT. In fact, surgery is mentioned and the countess offers to pay for it. She's like, oh, no, not that. Maybe not that. I don't know. And it's just so drama free, like of all the drama and murder and mayhem going on in this hotel.
MattieThe trans storyline is the most free of drama and death and sadness and murder, basically, which is the complete opposite of what you would expect. Bamboozled.
AlexIn fact, in what is, I think, both of our, like, we both kind of, I don't know if you cried. I cry every time I see this scene.
MattieI think I did. What scene? Oh, the one with her son?
AlexYes. Liz is one. She says like her one regret is not really getting to know her kids. And she sent them, you know, she did the alimony and childcare, but never talked to them. And so under a false pretense as Liz Taylor, she invites her son and she serves him at the bar without him knowing.
MattieOh, not as Liz Taylor. Because that is an actress in real life. But the Liz Taylor is not portraying Liz Taylor. That is just her chosen name, as we would say in the past.
Alexso as not to be confusing actually i just thought of this it was uh actually her given name by the countess because the countess is like who helped her be reborn oh that's cute yeah oh i love this
Mattieokay so the character is liz taylor it is not liz taylor the actress yeah now go on
Alexum and you know as any good barkeep is want to do she asks him some questions about his life
Mattieand you know he starts oh but he doesn't uh the the son doesn't know that she is his dad or does he well okay we find out that he does and he accepts her and says there's room for another woman in my life and it's just one of the most beautiful and she like is taken aback and
Alexhappy crying and then yeah and god yeah that line there's there i can have a room for another woman in my life uh meaning his dad and his wife because spoilers he like he he wasn't a ding-a-ling like he figured it out right away um because his mom like 10 or something yeah when his dad left yeah um but he what i like is he's still mad at her but mad because she was distant not mad because
Mattieshe's trans which like fuck yes we need to see more of that everywhere not just in media but
Alexalso in media yeah he was like oh no i'm mad but i can make room for another one i love the line i
MattieI'm mad because you're a shitty dad, not because you're a woman, basically.
AlexAnd then, once again, as this relationship is born, another birth happens. In fact, I think the only birth in the show. Her granddaughter. Yes, her granddaughter.
MattieThat's also another scene that made me cry. Yeah. Because it's so beautiful.
AlexAnd I think this is so important because it's actually sort of early, like towards the end of the season, Liz thinks like, oh, maybe I'll just kill myself to be. And she goes about it not even really in a depressed way, but a practical way, because remember, this is ghost world.
Mattieso then liz uh decides uh decides not to kill herself because she wants to reconnect with her son and then gets to spend time with her granddaughter and it's just so sweet like the positive trajectory of the story is great and and instead of you know being one of the typical like shot dead queers or someone who has to die at the end of the story or is a casualty she chooses to die because she has inoperable cancer and wants to live in the hotel with all
the ghosts and vampires who are her chosen family and it's actually really sweet like it's a beautiful moment it's not like oh no we're killing off a queer like it's just the least problematic storyline or character in the entire season and there's i mean there's serial killers so
Alexthe uh it the and um so we don't get email yes this hotel is also based off of the um h.h. holmes one that uh do you know do you know about this the um chicago hotel that all like the guy killed all of the women during the world's fair yes devil in the white city yes great book that I should probably read one day and not just the summary but um yeah I never thought I don't want
to give away every beat of how this episode is structured but it's it's beautiful um wait the episode where her son comes yes Liz's like final hurrah in fact I think it's a season finale uh second to last yeah yeah yeah okay yeah and um there's also a she has her own love story and sad it yes you think oh god this is so sad that is the one tragic thing but um so she she falls
in love with this young man who dies and tries to reconnect with him via medium and he says no
MattieBut then you should specify he dies in the hotel so that he he's they that's how they meet. He lives there as a ghost.
AlexYeah. And so, you know, she's trying to contact him and the medium's like, oh, he says no. And she's really broken up about it. But she is a boss ass bitch and life goes on. But after she dies, she's, you know, looking at her dead body, which, again, is morbidly beautiful. but then her true love behind and they do like say like true love and he's like you would he says something really really cheesy that is beautiful like i think it's from actually a liz taylor movie
Mattielike uh you had more living to do for me baby yeah that's like exactly oh you're right it is you think he's gonna be a douchebag and terrible because uh the countess has a bunch of men that she keeps around and he is one of them but he ends up falling in love with liz and and it's true love
Alexit's not betrayal the countess is just a petty bitch i've seen yeah i've seen um yeah it wasn't like oh you stole him from me it's like oh he was disloyal to me like yeah because he loves someone
Mattiethat wasn't her and god every man to be in love with her because she has issues don't don't we and and that's the point i mean we don't all murder people every day but you know he said it not me so the true the true horror oh god this is so cheesy i wanted to say the true horror of the story is not the trans character because they don't villainize the queer characters in this story the true horror is lady gaga oh i completely disagree i think the true horror
Alexof this entire season and a lot of other seasons of american horror story is loneliness because so much of the arcs and um like the i i don't know almost everything is motivated motivated
Mattieby the fear of being alone so does that mean this season sorry to interrupt but does that mean that this season is an outlier because they all get to live together in the end like liz has the chosen family so all the people that die there do choose to live together so they aren't lonely i don't
Alexwant to give away huge spoilers for other seasons but let's talk about this off mic because no i don't think it's no it's not an outlier or at least it's definitely not an outlier for the characters that are considered othered in American Horror Story. Gotcha, gotcha. I wasn't asking for spoilers so much as I was a theme. Yeah, I do very much think this is this theme. It is for everybody. Loneliness is kind of their greatest fear. And every terrible and beautiful thing is
done to combat loneliness oh that's true it all ends up just so i kept saying that it was like
Mattiefan fiction because everything was wrapping up like so perfectly it was almost like fan service but it was also beautiful and i loved it and you said that's just like what ryan murphy does at the end of each season of american horror story is it's like fan fiction everything gets wrapped
Alexa little and i yeah a little bit but not that's not a bad thing yeah and the thing is it is like super cheesy sometimes but it doesn't stick out from the rest of the season you know what i mean
Mattiethat's true this one is very i i want to say campy like kind of buffy the vampire slayer
Alexoh yeah yeah for sure and in fact i think after this season um they almost i don't want to say leaned into the camp because every every season is different and they're um different uh like directors and writers on each one uh sarah paulson's in pretty much everything though
Mattieand it's amazing that's why i wanted to watch this because of sarah paulson and then you were like
Alexyeah and she's straight she's like the only straight one i got it well i think i think she like makes out with women but like she's the straightest one for sure yeah and oh and one of
Mattiethe weirdest ones don't want to but anyway and and she's the reason that you got me to watch the show but you were like there's another character you're going to fall in love with and that's going to be your favorite and i was like okay i guess i'll watch it i'll watch it and then like two
Alexepisodes in i was like oh yes liz i love this let's do it let's go and honestly even if she was a stereotype of like a sassy bitter trans lady it was she she still does it uh she she is played
Mattieby a man problem problem matter oh i was gonna say do you want to touch on that i yeah i think
Alexthat um right i mean that's the thing i think we're coming to a place in history where we're figuring out uh or rather like what we are figuring out it's important for trans people to play trans characters most of the time because that is you know their lived experience but the other thing that is sort of important to know about ryan murphy is that or and specifically american horror
story is it's an ensemble cast that reuses the same actors kind of like hamilton right i was very
Mattieconfused and then you were like no it's like hamilton and i went okay okay and the unfortunate
Alexthing that we touched on is there aren't a lot of trans women who are liz's age oh yeah and oh god Yes. And I forget the actor's name, but he's...
MattieSo I actually looked it up and I read an interview from, there's one from Screen Rant and there was another one from Out. And the actor, who is Dennis O'Hare, didn't know and the writers didn't know that Liz was trans until like midway through writing it.
AlexWhat?
MattieYeah. He thought that it was just drag. They initially started with it just being drag and then fleshed out the character to be trans as the storyline got written.
AlexI mean, that makes sense.
MattieWhich, I mean, I know doesn't make it 100% better. Also, it came out in 2015. So that wasn't even something we were pushing for then for trans actors to play trans characters. And I just I think it's like I know they were probably a little bit trying to cover their asses by releasing that in 2019. Oh, I don't think so.
AlexBut like, no. Brian Murphy's been canceled so many times. I don't think no.
MattieBut that's so beautiful. They were like it just like naturally occurred that way. And I, man, I should have looked up the writers for this season and see if there were any trans people because it's just done so well that I can't imagine not talking to someone who is actually trans or knowing someone or being trans.
AlexI mean, if you look at the, I'm sure, like, at the very least, I mean, it's gay as fuck.
MattieNot that I don't like Ryan Murphy, but I don't know if he has walked in the shoes of an older trans woman.
AlexBut unfortunately, other than the beloved sister Karen on TikTok, I don't know any.
MattieOh, yeah. Me either. Yeah. Because of a lot of it is because of, well, suicide, obviously. And a lot of it is AIDS and repression and shame just because it's a different era.
AlexYeah. And I mean, that's the AIDS thing is also sort of alluded to because, you know, the the virus like it is literally we are having fun with literally called the virus. And it's sure it kills you, but also it basically saves everybody in this hotel. It saves them from.
MattieThat's what the vampires, the vampires have the virus. They call it like a blood virus.
AlexWhich is exactly, I mean, sorry, I know I don't want to be patronizing. Younger folks, watch How to Survive a Plague. It's an amazing documentary.
MattieIt's not about COVID.
AlexIt's not about COVID. It's about it's about act up in the AIDS in the 80s and 90s. And I think that Ryan Murphy does a really great service to older like a previous generation. And you can't get that right 100% of the time. So but I think he does a beautiful job playing her. uh the actor the the actor uh what's his name brian dennis o'hare dennis o'hare he he is fantastic
in um every um season of american horror story that he's in i was just gonna say we are uh
Mattiementioning uh older trans woman and we're talking about uh in the episodes liz has her 60th birthday so oh like almost when we say older trans person we don't mean like 30 or 40 we mean 60 yeah yeah
Alexlike when we are indeed uh the elder gaze unfortunately right we need to do an episode about that yeah hey yikes oh boy we should uh that's funny we should definitely put um a link to sister karen stuff on tiktok yes god i love her maybe that should be our next media episode do you think we could get into okay hey hey folks hey folks out there if any of you have ever talked to sister karen and or are buddies with sister karen please hook us up
she is she literally is like an inspiration to me as someone who grew up catholic and still holds a lot of Catholic values, but need to square them with my own faith. And that's also what American Horror Story kind of is, like squaring up your fears with what ultimately is beautiful
Mattieabout yourself. Can we briefly say that Sister Karen is an elder trans woman on TikTok who is Christian and talks about transitioning and later in life and being married and divorcing from her wife, but it being like amicable. And then that talks about Christianity.
So our hot, hot takes, or I guess my hot, hot take is definitely watch this season of American Horror Story, even if you don't like the scary things because the trans character is awesome and the storylines are beautiful and you can just hide your eyes during the blood there this is
Alexactually less there are a lot of butts there oh there there's a lot of butts and a lot of blood
Mattielady and man butts i'm trying to you know sex appeal yes sex appeals to people there's lots
Alexof lady and man butts uh-huh there's and we're focusing on liz but there are many queer characters yeah lots of bisexual representation actually and this was at a time like even like six or seven years ago being bi was still seen as like you just want attention or you can't cheat me me me
Mattieyeah like glee like i would say the early glee representation of you just want attention you
Alexjust want to be with a ryan murphy learned he learned glee was good for about oh eight minutes like like eight minutes and if you got rid of mr shoe who is clearly like okay this is not this is
Mattienot a glee review so what is uh so my my hot takes were to watch this season of american horror story if nothing else because liz is the best character even though lady gaga is is pretty
Alexawesome so honestly i kind of spaced out thinking about um the are we still podcasting i don't know are we still podcasting i spaced out thinking about just liz walking down the hallway that first time with no reservations and it just makes me so happy i mean it's coming out of
Mattiethe closet almost literally just coming out of the hotel room oh god and it is beautiful and of course we will link that scene in the show notes if you like what you hear you should go to twoheadedgirlfm and listen to our other spook uh trans tober episodes if you want to hear more about spooky queers and if not uh then you can i don't know not if not you could i don't know not but you could also support us
and uh alex's titty trap by going to patreon with uh twoheadedgirlfm and we're still taking questions i think for um to do a live uh for on four years on tea for me i think we're
Alexyeah it's a celebration we might do it live we might not but we're we've gotten a whole bunch of questions that, as always, are fantastic. We'll put the Google form in the show notes.
Specifically, if you want to ask Matt about his experiences after four years on testosterone, or if you're new to the show or have any general questions, we will answer those and we won't be
Mattieoffended like that you couldn't ask a trans person in a trans person in person you can ask you can ask us here and we won't call you out so i is that the end of our transtober then hmm maybe it is maybe it isn't there's so many spooky queers out there how do we know
Alexspooky spooky scary scary we might you know you know matt there's one yes alex you know there's there's one scary scary thing that terrorizes the entire community straight and queer alike twitter i mean yeah
Mattiedo you know what that is
